Winter on Teesside - Durham, 2 December 2024
This would be the second year running for this day trip. We will be exploring the fantastic wildlife that winters around the North Tees marshes.

The North Tees marshes consists of a number of areas that are all largely interconnected together, the most famous site being Saltholme which the RSPB have a 99 year lease on (since 2007). The North Tees marshes has important wintering bird populations and the industrial landscape offers an interesting backdrop in which to watch birds. In some winters it can be easy to see both Short-eared and Long-eared Owls, and the area often hosts wintering Tundra Bean Geese or Russian White-fronted Geese. The itinerary for the day remains flexible to allow for the tour to capitalise on species such as Great Northern Diver which often utilise the bays around Hartlepool, whilst the coastal fields and dunes sometimes host Merlin and Twite. Waders will almost definitely feature and if the tides are right hauled out Common and Grey Seals provide much entertainment. Reedbeds should hold Cetti's Warbler and Marsh Harrier, and in recent years Bearded Tit and Bittern remain a distinct possibility.
